Students from the University of Nairobi have warned Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko over what they termed as “meddling in comrades’ affairs”.
Speaking yesterday during and after the demonstrations witnessed within and around the University’s Main Campus, several students and students expressed concern over the use of certain students and former students to meddle in affairs of the students. They said Governor Sonko uses a group of students, some of whom are on suspension/expulsion to run affairs in the institution.
“We came out today in solidarity with our chairman Babu Owino. But now Sonko is using these people to try and divide us with the aim of weakening us”, said one of the demonstrators.
“Waliita Kamkunji yao last week but haikusucceed(they organized a Kamkunji last week but it never succeeded). Sasa wanaona vibaya ju comrades wako united ju ya Babu (therefore they feel threatened that comrades are united for the course of setting Babu Owino free man)”, said another.
“When it comes to issues of comrades, there is no jubilee or NASA. A comrade is a comrade. Sonko should stop using some guys to try bring politics into our issues” added another.
The group of students purportedly being used by Sonko call themselves Nairobi Mini-bloggers. They are said to have supported and campaigned for Sonko and now enjoy close links with City Hall. The same group of students are said to be the ones who attacked Nairobi County women representative Esther Passaris when she visited UoN to talk to female students during the campaign period.
The students got angered when word started flying around that this group of students were out to have some student leaders suspended for what they termed as “having organised a successful demonstration against the wishes of their oppressors”.
